What is....what is not...!

What is Morality?

Scenario I: Seeing his impoverished family situation (bed-ridden parents, handicapped sisters), a teenage boy steals a loaf of bread from the convenient store and gets caught.

Scenario II: Just for the sake of having fun, a pompous, rich teenage girl steals a gold necklace from the jewellery store and puts it in her Prada bag and gets caught.

What is Crime?

Scenario I: Hearing his daugher's screams, a father dashes in to the house seeing his neighbor about to rape his daughter. He picks up the axe and kills the neighbor on the spot. He's arrested.

Scenario II: Wanting to erase his wife from the picture and get her insurance money, a husband hires a killer to kill his wife. The husband is arrested.

The law is fair. The loopholes and the executors of the law are not fair. Guess who will be punished????? So tell me..what is morality? What is crime?? Would you believe if I say that these are not hypothetical situations??

What have we become?

A husband and a wife were struck by a truck on the way to their relatives' house. The truck drove away without stopping. The wife, covered in blood, became unconscious. She suffered serious wounds. The husband who was still conscious crawled to his wife and put her head on his lap. He cried to the onlookers for help. No one moved to help him. Many buses and trucks went by, without stopping. The husband kept that same position for over an hour until his wife died in his arms.

You think that you would have stopped and helped him?? You might say yes...but you'll be surprised by how you may react on the spot!!!!! This happened in Kerala not so long ago!

"The law is fair. The loopholes and the executors of the law are not fair."

morality n crime- yehhhh, sumtimes teh line is so distinct, n yet it is generalised!

"Solitary individuals will typically intervene if another person is in need of help: this is known as bystander intervention. However, researchers were surprised to find that help is less likely to be given if more people are present. In some situations, a large group of bystanders may fail to help a person who obviously needs help." - Bystander Apathy!

Search Genovese syndrome and you will be taken back by the actions of the onlookers/bystanders!!

And the law which is there to protect us..may not always do that...which will make you lose faith in the system..that's exactly what's happening in India!!

Life has no value in india these days merin...in a split second they just run over a person without paying attention in the road n they get out of the law very easily too.
humans r becoming very selfish..der interview, job or party has become more important than a persons life.
My friend was killed in such road accident..n i will forget those ppl who just stood der without doing anything.

@ Kavitha

We live in a selfish society, Kavitha. Tough luck for us.

My friend (who's Vietnamese) was talking about how an inhumane act by the drivers in Vietnam. If they hit a young child and the child is not dead, they would reverse and run over the child again. Apparently, it is easier to deal with an accident with a death than an injured person!

speaking by law :

defending is not a crime. self defense / or the first egs u ve given usually dont put u in jail or get u a punishment if u clearly put it.

these are all by paper..

but... i feel its the whole set up we are in which makes us vulnerable to giving up.

abt helping a wounded person. honestly, i will not do it. may be call an ambulance or police near by. but wil never get down from my car.

Yes, raz. Arguing self-defense may et you off the hook. At least that's what's in the paper..and you are correct. That's why I added later that loopholes and the executors of the law are not fair!! The less fortunate do get punished more often..whether we like it or not!! It's a battle of the fittest!! Tough luck!!

I know..many people do 'brag' about helping a wounded person. I think that we are all inherently good. But situations may inhibit us from doing the 'better' thing because..well...it's a long story.. and it's psychologically related!! In one line: We want to help...but we won't!!!

Don't blame it on people. We are not stone hearted yet (not all of us). Blame it on law or lack of its knowledge rather.

People fear that they might get in to trouble for helping people out of deadly accidents. FIR..all of those.

Poeple living in villages who are not read and informed abt such things come out readily to help cos there is no fear. How often I have seen ppl saving lives in villages??

Its those mid-ground ppl like us, who know tht there is law out there but do not know it completely, wants to stop but some thing prevents us from doing so.

I didn't blame it on the people. I wouldn't blame it on the law either. As I have mentioned..the law is fair!!! I repeat, I blame the loopholes and the executors of the law!!

Yes, people who know the repercussions of their actions may not help!!

But at the end of the day..what presides?: your fear of the repercussions or your conscience??

Don't you think that there are many out there who just don't want to get involved because they don't want to take the time of their busy schedules to help? They can't help unless they can relate to the situation!!
