So I told a friend that 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa' is a remake of a malayalam movie. And he said 'OH YEAH...with the legendary Rajnikanth'! My heart just broke!! Is NO ONE aware of the classic movie 'Manichitrathazhu' with Mohanlal? Oye!! We really are under represented..aren't we?
Yes, the malayalam version was the best. The hindi version was almost an exact copy of the malayalam (what else do you expect from Priyadarshan!) which lacked something important.. so the movie was not that entertaining. I love Akshay's acting though. The tamil was absolutely pathetic. The director even managed to copy a scene from the 90's malayalam movie 'Aaram Thampuran'! The telugu version was...well..you all know how horrible it was!!!

Now u r making a really big under-statement! the whole world knows about malayalees and 'Gods own country'....and i also know about the movie although i haven't watched it...
*Sorry abt the loooooooong comment*
"Oru murai vandhu paarpaayaa" this was the song that Shobana sang in the original malayalam version... I did see that malayalam version before I saw Chandramukhi.... Infact I saw all the 3 versions and the Malayalam version was the best for me... Shobana was simply awesome...
If Manichithirathaazhu can be rated 4.5/5, I wud rate Chandramukhi 4/5 (just for Rajini...Being his fan :D) and Bhool Bhulaiyya was total crap yaar... I hated that film except for that Hare Ram Hare Ram song...
And regarding Malayalam films being "Under Rated", YES... I have not seen much of malayalam movies except for a very few of them like 'His Highness Abdullah', 'Manichitrathaazhu', 'Gajakeshari Yoham' (my mom's favourite), 'Hari Krishnans' and that Mohanlal move where he acts as a school teacher cum CBI officer(I have seen this movie umpteen times... courtesy my thatha!!!).. But as far as I've seen and heard from ppl who watch them, MOST of the movies seemed to be 'Real' with less masala and the script dealing with human emotions (atleast the films in the past) and almost ALL of them would have a STRONG Kerala Native cultural influence which is not the case with Bollywood movies which also deals with human emotions (mainly Love and Sex)... That might be the reason for malayalam films being not known to ppl outside Kerala...
@ ela
Trust me. Most of the (north) Indians kids here know squat about Kerala. They're like 'so..emm..where is it?'! Yes..they are all northies. Well, K.R.Narayanan (our former president) was from Kerala. Shashi Tharoor (the Indian diplomat) is from Kerala. The greatest athlete of all times, P.T.Usha is from Kerala.
But it when comes to sports, we are ignored. Back in the day, you saw a glimpse of a cricketer from Kerala and they'd disappear just as they came. (Sreeshanth is an abomination to malayalees.)
When it comes to politics, (for some reason) the big guys tend to put us in the corner.
There are a lot of North Indians who are just plain ignorant about Kerala and its rich culture.
You know about Kerala..well..because you're my neighbor! :D
@ Sunil
It's all good. I encourage long comments. :D
And I'm glad that someone agrees with me on this: The malayalam version was indeed the best.
You see, most malayalam movies (at least from the 80's and 90's were) are (were) quite realistic. You're right, they incorporate human emotions and life style in a rather believable manner. I am not a fan of many malayalam movies that are out now a day because I feel as though they're trying to follow the Big B (Bollywood) in one way or another!! Stick to our culture and people might see some good movies!!
Also, I feel that each state in Kerala has its own culture. Even though Kerala and Tamil Nadu are like siamese twins, the kind of moves that the denizens of each state enjoys is completely different.
And that movie with Mohanlal as a CBI officer and a school teacher was a flop. I think you're talking about Olympian Anthony Adam! Yeah.. SO not realistic...was quite stupid too! :D
I think that the bollywood movies are apt for those who follow that kind of lifestyle and can relate to it or those who enjoy it! I havent watch a decent hindi movie in a LONG time. To tell you the truth, I downright hate most movies that come out of bollywood! :D
And come ON Sunil, how would you rate the movie Chandramukhi? Don't be biased because of Rajini! :D My friend told me that he liked the movie Sivaji JUST because Rajini was in it. I mean..he said that the movie lacked so many things..but he loved it because of Rajini. I don't get it! :D Probably because I'm not an ardent fan of...anyone!
You haven't watched a decent hindi movie in some time? Go grab 3 DVDs of Mallika Sherawat movies. :D
The problem is the money part. You know what I mean? These days hindi, tamil and telugu movies are made with big money and lot is spent on advt it to the country. Perhaps tht might be the reason! And tamil has Rajinikanth and Kamal Hasan...
I tell you... except these two people the north doesn't know anything abt the tamil movies as well!
@ Prashanth
If I had found her the least bit attractive, trust me..I would watch her movies. :D And what you said about tamil, hindi, and telugu movies go for malu movies as well.
And you know what is the worst thing about malu movies are? We are so reluctant in introducing new faces to the industry. This is hurting the industry so much..because these youngsters are going to tamil and telugu and kannada movies and making big money! Kerala is left with 50 yr old actors (acting with girls old enough to be their daughters) and no raw talent!
well.. what makes tamil chandramuki the best
1. rajini
2.jo's acting
3. prabhu's - enna koduma saravana sir ithu?
i ve seen the malayalam n the hindi version of it.
bt somehow i thot malayalam one had too much of dialog n the hindi verson sucked totally.
It happens with every body... perhaps thats why when a tamil, malayalee or bengali goes outside..mingle with others..becomes more alive towards itz own culture..it happens with every body to some extent i guess...
we have another version of Bhul Bhulaiya in bengali..from where the concept of bengali dancer and the bengali song has been take...no one in delhi was ready to digest that..
@ raz
I'm not an ardent fan of Rajini. Come to think of it, I'm not a fan of anyone. So..I understand your first point.
Oh come on, I thought that jyothika did not rise to her potential in the movie. At times, yeah...her acting was praise worthy. Most of the time, I think that she lacks originality!
:D I like prabhu!
I was talking about the movie overall. I mean the storyline itself didn't get my attention. I think that there were some unnecessary scenes in there...which really really really affected the movie in a negative manner. Then again..may be it's a culture thing! :D
Malayalam one had a lot of dialogue in it? :D It's not action movie, yeah? I thought that the malayalam was the BEST version because it very well conveyed both the spiritual and psychological aspects of the condition in the PERFECT manner. Since you're not a native speaker..may be that's why you thought so! :D
Hindi version really did disappoint me! :D
@ messenger
The malayalam version was the original..but I wasn't aware that the hindi version's bengali aspect was taken from the bengali version of the movie!
What you said about the culture is absolutely correct! :D
i liked both tamil and malayalam versions...i didnt even watch the hindi version..blah
but for me rajini's movies r always good..thalai vaazhga :D
malayalam movies should have more young actors ;)
@ Absconding
The malayalam version was the Best of the 3 coz the film got released in early 90s compared to the latest ones and even in the script was neatly managed without masala elements..
Haha.. and yes, u r right abt the name of that movie... It is a total masala movie... Specially the climax (The Rabis part!!:D)..
And oh yeah!!! I am biased coz of Rajini... He is simpy great!! I will rate any movie for him!!! :).. And we fans just need his presence in the movie with some punch dialogues and styles... We will make it a hit!!! :).. Yeah, it sounds crap, but thats how it works :)
@ kavitha
Honey..trust me..I can't agree with you more. But u know..it's all politics. We are not going to have some talented young actors UNTIL we start changing our mindsets! Well...if those old 'heroes' die..then may be we can have a glimpse of hope!
@ Sunil
There were more than enough 'masala' pics in the 90's and the 80's. The film was a great success because it had excellent story line, amazing script, absolutely talented cast, etc!!
I've never seen an actor worshipped like he has. I really want to know the fuss behind this whole thing..u know! My curious mind might take me places..! :D
